I recently attended a book launch where the author announced that this would be her last book. My first thought was, Wait. Are books going away? I certainly hope not.
As I prepare to publish my own book, Front-Row Success, I have been thinking a lot about books, not only the ones we write, but also the ones that shape us. Books may look different today. Some people still love holding a hardcover, turning the pages, and underlining their favorite passages. Others prefer reading on a Kindle or pressing play on an audiobook while driving, exercising, or getting ready for the day. The format may change, but the value of reading does not.
Why Reading Matters for Leadership and Success
My dad taught me something years ago that has stayed with me throughout my life: The more you read, the more you lead. The more you learn, the more you earn.
He was not talking only about earning money. Learning helps you earn opportunities, confidence, credibility, and a deeper understanding of yourself and the people around you. Every time you read a book, listen to an expert, or expose yourself to a new idea, you give yourself an opportunity to grow.
Reading matters for leaders because leadership is not only about having answers. It is also about expanding your ability to listen, understand, connect, and see possibilities. A book can introduce you to a leadership approach you have never considered. A personal story can help you understand what someone else may be experiencing. A practical idea can give you the courage to have a conversation you have been avoiding. Sometimes, one sentence can change the direction of your work, or even your life.
Books Can Be Ushers in Our Lives
As I prepare to publish Front-Row Success, I am especially grateful for the books, authors, mentors, and stories that have helped guide me throughout my career. I think of books as ushers. A great book can illuminate the path ahead of you. It can help you recognize where you are currently sitting and remind you that another seat may be available.
Maybe you feel stuck in the balcony of your career. Maybe you have settled into the general-admission seat of your comfort zone. Maybe you know what your front-row seat looks like, but you are not sure how to reach it. The right book may not give you every answer, but it can help you identify your next step.
Does Listening to an Audiobook Count?
Absolutely! The goal is not to prove that you consumed information in one particular format. The goal is to expose yourself to ideas that help you learn and grow.
There is no prize for choosing the “correct” format. The value comes from engaging with the content, thinking about it, and applying what you learn.
Of course, simply owning books does not make us wiser. An unread book sitting beautifully on a shelf cannot do much for you, other than make the shelf look impressive. Real growth happens when you stop and ask, What did I learn? Why does this matter? What will I do differently because of it?
When you find an idea that resonates with you, write it down. Share it with your team. Talk about it with a friend. Test it in your work or your life. Information becomes valuable when it leads to reflection, conversation, and action.
Your Front-Row Friday Reading Challenge
On this Front-Row Friday, I have a simple challenge for you: Pick up. Open. Or press play.
Pick up a printed book. Open your Kindle. Press play on an audiobook. Choose something that will help you grow, lead, communicate, dream, or live a little better.
You do not have to read an entire book this weekend. Start with one chapter. Start with ten pages. Start with fifteen minutes. Just start.
People who keep learning do not remain stuck in the balcony. They continue growing, moving, and finding their way toward a better seat.
The more you read, the more you lead. The more you learn, the more you earn. And the more intentionally you grow, the closer you move toward your own front-row seat in life.
What book has helped you become a better leader or changed the way you see your life? Share it in the comments so we can build a Front-Row reading list together.
Happy Front-Row Friday!
Your Head Usher,
Marilyn Sherman
