Have you ever looked around at your life and wondered, “How did I end up in this seat, and why am I still sitting here?”
Maybe you’re in a job that no longer excites you, a relationship that isn’t fulfilling, or a routine that leaves you feeling like you’re watching everyone else live the life you’ve always wanted. You know something needs to change, but somehow, you keep sitting in the same seat.
I know that feeling because 25 years ago, I had a moment that changed my life forever. And believe it or not, it happened at an Earth, Wind & Fire concert!
Recently, I had the opportunity to return to an Earth, Wind & Fire concert, and this time, I was sitting in the FRONT-ROW! Talk about a full-circle moment!
The Night That Changed Everything
Twenty-five years ago, I attended an Earth, Wind & Fire concert. I’ve always loved their music, and I couldn’t wait to hear them perform. But there was one problem. I was sitting way up in the balcony.
As I looked down at the people in the front-row, I could see them dancing, singing, laughing, and having the time of their lives. Meanwhile, I was sitting up in the balcony, watching everyone else have all the fun.
And I remember thinking, “Why am I stuck up here? I want to be down there!”
Then something happened that I wasn’t expecting. I had a realization that hit me harder than any song they played that night.
I wasn’t just sitting in the balcony of that concert. I was sitting in the balcony of my LIFE!
At the time, I was in a bad relationship (it was a LONG time ago). I was overweight. I was bitter and resentful about things that hadn’t gone my way. And the worst part? I had become comfortable being unhappy. All this while I was a motivational speaker! The irony hit me like a ton of bricks.
I was watching other people enjoy their lives while I was settling for a view that didn’t make me happy.
That night, something inside me shifted. I realized that if I wanted a different view, I had to be willing to change my seat.
So, I got up. Literally. I made my way down to the front-row of that concert, and I made a decision that would change the direction of my life.
I wasn’t going to settle for the balcony anymore!
What Does It Mean to Live Life in the Front-Row?
Living life in the Front-Row doesn’t mean you have the perfect job, the perfect relationship, or the perfect life. Believe me, life doesn’t work that way!
It means making a conscious decision to participate fully in your life instead of watching it happen from a distance. It’s about recognizing that while you can’t always control what happens to you, you CAN control how you respond, what you focus on, and what you do next.
Sometimes we get stuck in what I call “balcony thinking.” We convince ourselves that this is just the way things are. We make excuses for why we can’t change. We tell ourselves we’re too old, too busy, too inexperienced, or that we’ve missed our opportunity.
But here’s what I’ve learned after 25 years of sharing this message with audiences around the world: You don’t have to stay in a seat just because you’ve been sitting there for a long time!
The first step toward Front-Row Success is recognizing that you have choices. Maybe you can’t change everything overnight, but you can change your attitude, your focus, your actions, and ultimately, your direction.
It’s Never Too Late to Change Your Seat
Fast-forward 25 years. There I was, at another Earth, Wind & Fire concert, only this time I wasn’t looking down from the balcony, wishing I were somewhere else.
I was sitting in the FRONT-ROW!
I could see the performers up close, feel the energy of the music, and dance and sing along with everyone around me. But the greatest part of the experience wasn’t how close I was to the stage.
It was remembering who I was 25 years earlier and celebrating how far I’d come.
I thought about the decisions I’d made, the challenges I’d overcome, the people I’d met, the places I’d traveled, and the incredible opportunities that came from that one moment of clarity.
Was every moment of those 25 years easy? Of course not! I’ve experienced disappointment, heartbreak, setbacks, and loss, just like everyone else.
But I’ve also learned that a setback doesn’t mean you have to retreat to the balcony. Sometimes life changes your circumstances, and you have to figure out how to find your Front-Row again.
And that’s exactly why this message matters so much to me.
It’s never too late to create a new beginning, no matter how long you’ve been sitting in the wrong seat.
Three Ways to Move from the Balcony to the Front-Row
If you’re feeling stuck in some area of your life, here are three ways to start making your move.
- Recognize Where You’re Settling
Before you can change your seat, you have to acknowledge that you’re not happy with the view.
Ask yourself: Where am I settling for less than I want? Is it in my career? My relationships? My health? My attitude? Have I become so accustomed to a situation that I’ve stopped believing something better is possible?
You can’t change what you’re unwilling to acknowledge. And sometimes, the most important conversation you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself.
- Stop Waiting for Someone to Give You a Better Seat
Here’s something I learned that night at the concert: Nobody was coming up to the balcony to invite me to the front-row!
I had to make the decision to move.
The same is true in life. It’s easy to wait for the perfect opportunity, the perfect timing, or for someone else to recognize our potential. But if you spend your life waiting for permission to pursue what matters to you, you could be waiting a very long time.
Maybe you’ve been waiting to apply for that promotion, start that business, have that difficult conversation, or finally pursue something on your bucket list.
What’s one action you could take today that would move you closer to where you want to be?
You don’t have to have the entire journey figured out. You just have to be willing to get out of your seat.
- Celebrate How Far You’ve Come
Sitting at that concert 25 years later was a powerful reminder to celebrate progress.
Sometimes we’re so focused on where we want to go that we forget to appreciate how far we’ve already traveled.
Think about the challenges you’ve overcome, the lessons you’ve learned, and the ways you’ve grown. Maybe your life doesn’t look exactly as you imagined it would, but that doesn’t mean you haven’t made meaningful progress.
Celebrate your wins, big and small. Give yourself credit for the times you showed up, took a risk, made a difficult decision, or kept going when things got tough.
And remember, Front-Row Success isn’t just about getting a better seat. It’s about appreciating the journey and enjoying the view along the way.
Your Front-Row Is Waiting
As I stood there at the concert, singing and dancing to the music of Earth, Wind & Fire, I couldn’t help but smile.
Twenty-five years earlier, I had been in the balcony, wishing I were somewhere else. Now I was right where I wanted to be.
And I realized something important.
The biggest change wasn’t my seat at the concert. It was the decision I’d made all those years ago to stop settling for a life that didn’t make me happy.
So, here’s my challenge to you this week: Take a look at where you’re sitting in your life. Are you happy with the view? Are you participating fully, or are you watching from the balcony while life passes you by?
If you’re not happy with your seat, remember that you have the power to make a move.
It might take courage. It might require getting out of your comfort zone. And it certainly won’t mean everything will be perfect.
But imagine what your life could look like 25 years from now if you made one important decision today.
Because if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this:
You don’t deserve to stay stuck in the balcony of your life. You deserve a Front-Row seat!
And if I could do it, you can too.
Your Front-Row is waiting!

Frequently Asked Questions About Front-Row Success and Personal Growth
What does it mean to live life in the Front-Row?
Living life in the Front-Row means taking an active role in creating the life and career you want instead of passively accepting circumstances that leave you unfulfilled. Marilyn Sherman’s Front-Row philosophy encourages people to focus on what they can control, adopt a positive mindset, take personal responsibility, and pursue meaningful goals.
How can I change my life when I feel stuck?
Start by identifying one area of your life where you’ve been settling. Decide what you would like to change, then take one specific action toward that outcome. Meaningful personal growth often begins with a change in perspective followed by consistent action. You don’t have to transform your entire life overnight to begin moving forward.
Is it ever too late to make a major life change?
No! While circumstances and responsibilities can influence your choices, personal growth and meaningful change are possible at any age. The key is to stop assuming that your past determines your future and begin identifying opportunities to move toward what matters most to you.
What inspired Marilyn Sherman’s Front-Row philosophy?
Marilyn Sherman’s Front-Row philosophy began more than 25 years ago at an Earth, Wind & Fire concert. While sitting in the balcony, she realized that she was also sitting in the balcony of her own life, feeling unhappy and unfulfilled. That realization inspired her to make changes and ultimately became the foundation of her motivational speaking message about taking ownership of your life and success.
How does the Front-Row mindset apply to leadership and career success?
A Front-Row mindset encourages leaders and employees to take responsibility, focus their energy on what they can influence, and actively contribute rather than simply observe. In the workplace, this approach can help people strengthen accountability, resilience, engagement, and their willingness to pursue opportunities and overcome obstacles.
